Sculptural lighting studies

THE PROJECT

I explored a family of curved, ribbed forms through sketches and renders. These studies develop the relationship between an object’s outer silhouette, the spaces between its elements and the light within.

01 / THE PROCESS

Developing the form

The sketches examine variations in profile and rotation, using repeated elements to define an open structure. They record different ways of shaping the object and considering its relationship with a light source.

Sketch studies of curved profiles and ribbed arrangements.

02 / THE PROCESS

Testing different settings

I carried the form into two rendered studies: a fire-pit/light concept and a standing light. Placing a related form on a stand changes its proportions and its relationship with the surrounding space.

03 / THE PROCESS

A second application

The fire-pit/light render holds the form closer to the ground, with the repeated ribs enclosing a glowing centre. It provides another visual test of the same family of forms.

OUTCOME

The work, brought together.

Together, the studies show how I use sketching and visualisation to investigate a form across different product contexts.
